Global Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Market Size & Trends Report Segmented by Device Type (Automatic, Fixed Pressure, BiPAP), Modality (Standalone Benchtop Systems, Portable Devices), End-user (Hospitals, Clinics, Home-care Settings) & Regional Forecast to 2031

The global continuous positive airway pressure market size is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6% in the next 5 years. The growth is supported by the increasing prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), growing aging population susceptible to sleep-related breathing disorders, rising obesity rates contributing to airway obstruction, expanding use of home sleep testing and improved diagnostic rates, and shift towards home-based respiratory care. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a medical device used for noninvasive treatment of breathing problems, primarily obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A CPAP device consists of a machine, a flexible tube, and a mask (covering nose, mouth, or both). The CPAP machine delivers a continuous, mild flow of pressurized air through a mask. This constant air pressure keeps the upper airway open during sleep, preventing airway collapse, snoring, and interrupted breathing. By maintaining an open airway, the device prevents the throat muscles from relaxing too much and blocking airflow. CPAP therapy is considered a first-line treatment for moderate to severe OSA, but also treats central sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and neuromuscular disorders. Beyond this, CPAP helps in eliminating sleep disruptions, reducing excessive daytime fatigue, thereby lowering the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Although initially uncomfortable, it is considered the most reliable method for treating sleep apnea.

Rising prevalence and diagnosis of sleep apnea to drive demand

The increasing prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea is a key driver for the CPAP market. This surge in the number of OSA cases is closely linked to lifestyle-related risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and metabolic disorders. According to an article published by NIH, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an increasingly common disorder, affecting approximately 17% of adult women and 34% of men. Further, as global obesity rates continue to rise, the addressable patient population for CPAP therapy is expanding in both developed and emerging economies.

Another important factor is the improvement in diagnostic rates. Sleep disorders were historically underdiagnosed due to limited access to sleep laboratories and low awareness among primary care physicians. However, with an increasing number of public awareness campaigns like the Count on Sleep, a collaborative multi-organizations project led by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, is helping to drive this awareness and educating both the public and the healthcare communities on the importance of diagnosis and long-term treatment. This has changed with the broader use of home sleep testing devices and screening tools, which have lowered the threshold for diagnosis. Consequently, earlier and more frequent diagnosis has directly translated into higher prescription volumes for CPAP devices. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea can lead to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and reduced cognitive performance. As these risks are increasingly recognized, physicians are more inclined to initiate CPAP therapy as part of long-term disease management strategies.

The rapid shift toward home-based respiratory care propels CPAP market growth

Traditionally, the diagnosis procedure for OSA required patients to stay overnight in a specialized sleep lab, which is an expensive and uncomfortable process called polysomnography. However, there is a rapid shift toward "Home Sleep Apnea Testing" as the primary diagnostic tool for CPAP initiation. This shift is driven by the demand for faster, more accessible, and advanced testing methods, ensuring patients can get their CPAP treatment sooner.

One of the key advantages of at-home testing is that it allows patients to sleep in their own beds, thereby reducing the sleep disruptions caused by unfamiliar surroundings, such as those in sleep clinics. Moreover, it is significantly more affordable, often costing a fraction of in-lab studies, and it bypasses long waitlists, allowing for quicker diagnosis. Furthermore, advancements in wearable technology now provide highly reliable data for identifying moderate-to-severe OSA. This transition in respiratory care from hospital settings to home environments has become a significant growth driver for CPAP adoption.

Additionally, health care systems prioritize reducing the inpatient costs and improve resource utilization, encouraging the use of home-based therapies. CPAP therapy aligns well with this model, as it does not require continuous clinical supervision once the patient is properly trained. Further, the development of portable CPAP devices has increased their adoption rates in rural populations. While in-lab studies remain necessary for complex cases like COPD and heart failure, HSAT has become the preferred, primary diagnostic tool for moderate-to-severe OSA diagnosis. Supported by favourable reimbursement policies and the shift toward home-based care, CPAP adoption is expanding rapidly, with home settings becoming the primary environment for long-term sleep apnea management.

Device Type Segment Outlook

The continuous positive airway pressure market is categorized into automatic CPAP, fixed-pressure CPAP, and Bi-level PAP (BiPAP) devices. Automatic CPAP devices hold the largest share in the market due to their adaptive and technologically advanced features. The high demand for these devices is primarily driven by the shift towards personalized, home-based, and comfort-oriented therapy. Fixed pressure devices, although being the traditional/standard method of treatment for OSA, maintain a significant share in the market mostly due to their cost-effectiveness. However, Bi-level (BiPAP) devices are emerging as the fastest-growing segment. The demand for BiPAP devices is driven by their increasing adoption in complex respiratory care, the rising geriatric population, and the shift towards home healthcare.

Regional Outlook: Advanced sleep care infrastructure supports North America CPAP market leadership

North America holds the largest share of the global continuous positive airway pressure market, driven by increasing prevalence of breathing disorders, advanced sleep healthcare infrastructure, and widespread adoption of home sleep testing. The region also benefits from the presence of strong key players and favourable reimbursement policies. Followed by North America, Europe represents the second-largest market, with a stable growth supported by aging demographics, rising awareness of sleep disorders, advanced sleep labs, and supportive reimbursement policies. However, the Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the highest growth rate over the forecast period, due to rapid urbanization, increasing awareness, improving access to diagnostic services, and rising healthcare expenditure in the region.
