Global Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Devices Market Size & Trends Report Segmented by Product (Endocardial, Epicardial), Indication (Non-valvular/Valvular Atrial Fibrillation, Stroke Prevention), End User (Hospitals, ASCs, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories), & Regional Forecast to 2031

The global left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) devices market size is set to witness a growth rate of 15% in the next 5 years. Rising prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and stroke risk, growing geriatric population, shift toward minimally invasive procedures, technological advancements in devices, and favorable reimbursement and regulatory support are some of the key factors driving the LAAC devices market. To learn more about the research report, download a sample report.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) devices are minimally invasive implants that are developed to block off the left atrial appendage, which is a small blood sac located in the heart, where patients suffering from atrial fibrillation can develop blood clots. Closing off this space prevents clots from becoming a source of embolism and, therefore; reduces the risk of stroke while simultaneously eliminating the need for long-term anticoagulation therapy. LAAC devices are typically implanted through a vein using a catheter, there they expand to fit the appendage and permanently block blood flow into it. LAAC devices are intended for patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are unable to take oral anticoagulants due to contraindications or intolerance.

Rising prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and stroke risk to propel market demand

One major factor influencing the growth of the left atrial appendage closure device market is the increasing prevalence of AF as well as an increase in the risk of stroke in patients who have AF. AF is the most frequently occurring sustained cardiac arrhythmia worldwide, and its prevalence continues to rise due to the rapid growth in aging population, increased incidence of lifestyle-related diseases, such as obesity, increasing incidence of hypertension and diabetes, and improving diagnostic tools. AF is affecting 1–2% of the population and up to 10% of those over 75, with rising global prevalence and significant morbidity and mortality (Source: NCBI). The presence of AF results in a disturbance to normal blood flow within the atria, which results in a stasis of blood in the atria; this is especially true in the left atrial appendage, where almost 90% of thrombi found in non-valvular patients with AF are located.

The relationship between AF and stroke risk has also created an increased demand for effective preventive strategies. The presence of AF is associated with an approximate five-fold increase in the risk of an ischemic stroke occurring. The ischemic strokes associated with AF are generally more severe than ischemic strokes that are not associated with AF and result in an increased incidence of death and long-term disability. Oral anticoagulation has been established as the traditional method of preventing stroke for patients with AF; however, many patients either have a contraindication to long-term anticoagulation due to bleeding or may not comply with prescribed medications.

The left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) device fills an important gap in the management of thrombus formation, providing a non-pharmacological, single intervention treatment that targets the underlying cause of thrombus formation. As clinicians become increasingly aware of the limitations of anticoagulant therapy, there has been an increasing preference for device-based options, particularly within high-risk patients. Additionally, the safety and efficacy of LAAC procedures have been continuously documented in clinical trials and has built confidence in their use, contributing to increased guideline inclusion and clinical practice adoption.

The increasing number of AF patients combined with the lack of effective stroke prevention options is increasing demand for left atrial appendage closure devices at a rapid rate. Furthermore, US healthcare systems are beginning to recognize the long-term financial benefits associated with stroke prevention and related complications continue to contribute to overall market growth. As the prevalence of AF continues to increase across the globe, particularly in emerging markets experiencing improvement in their health care infrastructures, the demand for LAAC procedures continue to increase and provide ongoing strategic support for the overall market.

Shift toward minimally invasive procedures is driving the market growth

The demand for minimally invasive procedures is a key factor responsible for driving growth of the left atrial appendage closure devices market. The past decade has seen an increase in the popularity of minimally invasive procedures among patients and health care organizations as compared to standard surgical procedures because of their clinical and economic advantages. As a result, catheter, or percutaneous, access LAAC procedures are aligned with the larger transformation of cardiovascular care to minimally invasive techniques.

In contrast to the surgical closure, where an incision is made, the LAAC is completed with a minimal number of punctures, typically through the femoral vein, and sedation. This results in minimal procedural trauma, a lower incidence of complications, and a shorter length of stay. Patients undergoing a percutaneous LAAC typically have an average length of stay of 1-2 days as opposed to a week for a surgical equivalent. Shorter recovery periods provide greater patient satisfaction and expedite the return to normal activities, both of which are important considerations when making treatment decisions. Minimally invasive LAAC procedures have demonstrated clinical success and increased patient safety by improving device design and imaging technology. The ability to use real-time imaging technologies e.g., transesophageal echocardiography, fluoroscopy, allows for accurate device placement, which enhances the outcomes of these procedures while also reducing the risks involved. As physicians become more experienced with these techniques, the rates of adoption have increased throughout the hospitals and cardiac centers.

Minimally invasive procedures provide cost efficiencies to healthcare systems. Shortened hospital stays, less need for ICU beds, and decreased complication rates all lead to lower overall costs. Value-based healthcare models motivate providers to provide the best care possible for the least amount of money. Ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) are also expanding access and increasing the volume of LAAC procedures.

Furthermore, there is a growing trend towards patient-focused care, supported by the advancement of technology and favorable clinical outcomes that are driving the rapid transition to minimally invasive LAAC procedures. As LAAC devices see continued growth in usage due to this trend, it is likely to be a major factor in helping to expand the LAAC device market around the world.

Product Segment Outlook

Endocardial devices constitute the larger share of the left atrial appendage closure devices market because they can be applied most frequently to percutaneous catheter-based procedures as minimally invasive devices that are very safe and effective; therefore, endocardial devices have a high success rate and clinical data supporting it. Endocardial devices are widely used in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are contraindicated to receive long-term anticoagulants. Epicardial devices are the fastest-growing segment of the market as they have increased demand in the surgical environment and in hybrid procedures, particularly in patients undergoing cardiac surgical procedures with other types of surgery.

Regional Outlook: North America leads the left atrial appendage closure devices market & Asia Pacific emerges as the fastest-growing region driven by expanding healthcare access & rising AF burden

North America represents the largest segment of the left atrial appendage closure device market attributed to a highly developed healthcare infrastructure, extensive usage of minimally invasive treatments, presence of numerous leading companies, and supportive reimbursement policies as the factors driving its growth. Also, North America has a large population of patients with AF and strong clinical guidelines to support the use of LAAC technologies. Conversely, APAC is the fastest growing region for this market; demand for LAAC technology continues to rise due to increased investment in healthcare, heightened awareness of stroke prevention, increased patient populations, and improved access to advanced cardiac care. The expansion of medical infrastructure and government initiatives are likely to continue to boost the growth of the LAAC devices market throughout emerging economies in APAC.
