Capnography Devices are used in the medical field to measure and present the difference or concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) present in the exhaled breaths of a patient continuously. Providing real-time information on the ventilatory status of the patient is vital. Capnography equipment generates capnograms that use end-tidal CO₂ values to assist medical professionals in determining the integrity of the airway, adequacy of ventilation, functioning of the circulation, and the metabolic status of the patient. There are many different types of capnography equipment such as stand-alone capnometers, integrated multiparameter monitors, and ancillary sensors or disposable supplies that allow for the identification of respiratory depression and apneic conditions prior to the occurrence of significant clinical problems as well as equipment-related performance issues. Capnography equipment has become common in anesthetized patients, during the administration of procedural sedation, critical care settings, emergency medicine, and the mechanical ventilation of both patients and patients at prehospital settings. Capnography devices are being increasingly utilized worldwide, with availability in hospitals, ambulatory practice, and prehospital.
Rising prevalence of respiratory diseases to propel market demand
The need for capnography equipment has increased significantly due to the increased prevalence of respiratory conditions which require a continuous assessment and monitoring of a patient's ventilatory status. The increasing prevalence of chronic respiratory diseases, such as COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, and sleep-related breathing disorders, will continue to increase throughout the world because of the globalization trend, aging populations, rapid urbanization, air pollution, smoking, and occupational exposures. In addition, the higher incidence of acute respiratory diseases (pneumonia) and ARDS and their associated sequelae, such as infection-related illnesses, will create a demand for more advanced techniques to monitor respiratory disease severity.
Capnography is vitally important in the management of patients with respiratory conditions because it enables the clinician to measure the patient's end tidal CO2 (EtCO2) in real-time to assess efficiency of ventilation, airway clearance, and perfusion of the lungs/pulmonary circulation. For patients with chronic respiratory conditions, capnography can identify hypoventilation, airway obstruction, and acute respiratory decompensation very quickly, permitting intervention by the clinician in order to minimize the risk of potential complications. The need for capnography is particularly relevant in hospitalized patients, including patients in intensive care units (ICUs), emergency departments and step-down facilities where the risk of Recurrent Respiratory Infections (RRIs) is especially high. Mounting mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation into advanced respiratory disease patients bolsters the move towards capnography. Through continuous monitoring of CO₂ levels, clinicians can more accurately adjust ventilator settings, verify endotracheal tube placement, and evaluate ventilation's success. With a continual focus on safety and improved patient outcomes, hospitals are beginning to consider capnography as a standard of care, not merely an adjunct monitoring device for those who are struggling with respiratory disorders.
In addition, as respiratory illness continues to rise, capnography expands beyond the surgical suites into ambulatory care, at home health assistance and emergency medical service environments. Patients who are experiencing chronic respiratory problems are being increasingly cared for through outpatient and at-home services, where (portable) hand-held capnography devices facilitate off-site monitoring of individuals for early indication of respiratory failure. The transition toward decentralized patient care models additionally supports a heightened demand for compact and user-friendly capnography products.
As respiratory disorders place growing clinical and financial strains on health systems around the globe, there is a rapidly increasing demand for accurate, continuous, and non-invasive monitoring of individuals' respiratory health. Capnography equipment satisfies this need, thus the increase in the number of individuals with respiratory disorders creates a solid, consistent driver for market growth.

Increasing focus on patient safety and quality of care is driving the market growth
Patient safety and quality of care are now becoming more important factors within the capnography equipment market. Healthcare systems across the world are increasingly emphasizing on reducing avoidable adverse events, improving clinical outcomes, and enhancing patient safety through early detection of physiological deterioration. Respiratory compromise remains one of the most common problems causing morbidity and mortality in clinical situations including anesthesia, procedural sedation, critical care, and emergency medicine. This has led to efforts being focused on providing patients with safer alternatives to hypoventilation, apnea, and airway obstruction by identifying these problems as soon as possible following initial monitoring. Capnography enables healthcare providers to continuously monitor the end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO₂) of patients and rapidly alert clinicians to signs of respiratory failure. Capnography can identify ventilation problems without delay, unlike traditional pulse oximeters that may not detect low levels of oxygen saturation until a later time. When healthcare providers use capnography as an early warning system for cardiopulmonary complications, they significantly reduce the risk of severe complications such as cardiac arrest, brain damage, and death, increasing the value of capnography as a monitoring tool for patient safety.
Awareness of the need for more advanced safety measures during sedation and anesthesia has increased over time among providers of healthcare services. For example, hospitals and outpatient facilities have recognized the need to expand their monitoring protocols to increase the likelihood of capturing evidence of serious adverse events during moderate to deep sedation. Capnography is now regularly recommended for patients who have a higher risk of developing complications, including individuals who are elderly or have pre-existing pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, as an increasing number of healthcare providers strive to provide consistent quality care.
The quality-of-care initiatives are focused on increased documentation, accountability, and compliance with clinical guidelines as a focus. Digital capture of data, alarm systems, and connection to multiparameter monitors and EHR allow capnography systems to meet these goals through improving clinical decision making, completing auditing processes, and providing support for individual programs committed to continuous quality improvement to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.
The financial impact on healthcare organizations due to medico-legal inspections or court cases, combined with the potential for adverse events resulting from sedation-related complications (unnoticed respiratory depression), interruption of ventilation, and limitation on length of stay will result in increasing investment by healthcare organizations in technologies that provide evidence for the reduction of risk.
With the increasing support provided by value-based care models, the investment in technologies that improve the safety of care while maximizing outcomes will be essential for helping to provide the best possible care to patients. The rise of patient safety as well as quality of care as a major focus on capnography is moving capnography away from its traditional role as an ancillary monitoring device towards becoming a standard element of clinical practice. This transition is causing growth and acceptance of capnography for use in clinical practice such as hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and emergency rooms. The increase in the use of capnography will continue to spur ongoing growth in the capnography equipment market.

Technology Segment Outlook
The side-stream capnography segment accounted for the largest share of the capnography equipment market because it is utilized the most in operating rooms, intensive care units, emergency departments and during procedural sedation. Side-stream capnography technology can be used with both intubated and non-intubated patients. The ability to easily integrate into multiparameter monitors, along with low cost, has contributed to its widespread use. On the other hand, micro-stream capnography represents the fastest growing segment of the capnography equipment market. The growth in micro-stream capnography is attributed to its lower sampling flow rates, reliability in patients with low tidal volumes, and the ability to expand its use to neonatal and paediatric care and non-invasive ventilation settings. In addition, the increased demand for portable, ambulatory, and home-based respiratory monitoring will continue to fuel the global adoption of micro-stream capnography technology in the future.
Regional Outlook: North America expected to hold a major share in the capnography equipment market
