Microneedle drug delivery systems (MDDS) are advanced forms of transdermal drug delivery systems that consist of an array of microscopic needles typically ≤25-2000μm, used to deliver therapeutic agents through the skin. The needles penetrate the epidermal layer of the skin, but do not stimulate the deep nerve endings or the capillaries, allowing for minimal invasiveness and discomfort when administering the therapy. The microneedles can be made from a variety of materials including metal, polymer, silicon and ceramic and can be manufactured as solid, hollow, coated, dissolving, or hydrogel forming. MDDS has the capability to administer vaccines, biologics, peptides, insulin, and other medications, improving patient compliance, bioavailability and convenience compared to traditional injection systems.

Rising prevalence of chronic diseases requiring long-term drug administration to propel market demand

The rising prevalence of chronic diseases requiring long-term drug administration is a major factor driving the growth of the microneedle drug delivery systems market. According to the WHO, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for approximately 74% of all deaths globally, with cardiovascular diseases causing over 19 million deaths annually, followed by cancer (10 million), chronic respiratory diseases (4 million), and diabetes (>2 million). These four major chronic diseases collectively account for around 80% of all premature NCD-related deaths worldwide, highlighting their substantial global health burden. Often, chronic illness requires patients to be treated with medications daily for a prolonged period of time or on an ongoing, life-long basis. The desire for safe, easy, and convenient options for delivering medication play an important role in how the market for microneedles is evolving and expanding. Microneedles provide an alternative solution to traditional methods like injections that have many negative side effects including pain, discomfort, fear, and anxiety from needles, as well as poor compliance due to requiring repeated occurrences. Microneedles eliminate these problems associated with delivering medication through injections by providing a means to deliver medications through the skin in a minimally invasive manner with virtually no pain while also being very simple for patients to administer themselves. Since microneedles simplify the process of self-administering medication, patients may not need as many visits to healthcare facilities, leading to increased patient compliance.

Additionally, microneedle systems offer significant advantages for delivering biologics, peptides, and other complicated medications being used at an increasing rate to manage chronic diseases. Given that many healthcare providers globally are working to improve the quality of long-term treatments for patients, and to reduce overall costs of providing those treatments, the market for new innovative delivery options is likely to continue to grow over the coming years.

Growing demand for painless and patient-centric drug delivery is fueling the demand for microneedle drug delivery systems

The demand for non-painful and patient-centric drug delivery is a major factor fueling growth of the microneedle drug delivery systems market. Patients desire a treatment option that causes lesser pain, has fewer administration requirements, and ultimately offers an enhanced overall experience when receiving their health care through the drug delivery method. The traditional hypodermic injection typically cause pain, cause needle fear, cause anxiety, and carry a risk of developing a needle stick injury; all of which can reduce the likelihood of remaining adherent to the prescribed therapy. The microneedle delivery system overcomes the limitations of the traditional hypodermic injection by creating microscopic channels to the surface of the skin, which allows for drug delivery without causing pain to the patient because the microneedles do not penetrate the dermal layer of the skin far enough to stimulate the majority of the nerve endings in the skin. The relative ease of using microneedles allows patients to self-administer their medications rather than having to go to a healthcare facility for each dose, therefore supporting home care. This is consistent with the increase in patient-focused treatment modalities that provide the patient with convenience, safety, and quality of life.

There is also an increased demand for user-friendly delivery systems for vaccines, biologic therapies, and chronic disease therapies; thus, microneedle technologies are increasingly being adopted by health care providers and pharmaceutical companies, which provides an opportunity for the continued accelerated growth of the microneedle drug delivery systems market across the globe.

Type Segment Outlook

Dissolvable microneedles account for the largest share of the microneedle drug delivery systems market. This is majorly attributed to factors like their ease of use, safety profile, and ability to be used for many different types of drugs and vaccines. The materials used to make these needles dissolve within the body at the site of application and, therefore, eliminating sharps waste. As a result, users are less likely to incur a sharp injury when using these needles. These needles can also encapsulate a wide variety of drugs, including vaccines, peptides, proteins, and biologics, and support the growing use of these needles for research and commercial purposes.

Hydrogel-forming microneedles are expected to be the fastest-growing segment in the market over the forecast period. These devices have a controlled or sustained method for releasing drugs and better drug-load capacity as compared to other types. As there is growing interest in long-acting therapies, personalized medicine, and managing chronic diseases, along with advancements in polymer and smart drug-delivery technologies, the number of potential applications for hydrogel-forming microneedles will continue to expand, allowing for rapid growth of this segment.

Regional Outlook: North America's market leadership is driven by advanced healthcare infrastructure, strong biopharmaceutical innovation, and early adoption of next-generation drug delivery technologies

North America represents the largest regional market for microneedle drug delivery systems majorly due to its good healthcare system, presence of large number of pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and major R&D expenditure, high adoption of new technology within health care, and the region’s having large populations suffering from chronic diseases and needing long-term treatment. Regulatory restrictions are favorable for development and increased use of biologics and driving demand for less invasive forms of drug delivery is expected to continue supporting its large market share. The US is the leading country in terms of the market share of the North American microneedle drug delivery market, largely because of its strength in clinical trials and early adoption of new innovations.

The Asia-Pacific region is projected to be the fastest-growing regional market for microneedle drug delivery systems over the forecast period due to the modernization of healthcare, expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing, increasing healthcare spending, and large patient population needing treatment in the countries of the region like China, Japan, India, and South Korea. Advances in understanding drug administration and the identification of existing and potential vaccines is leading to the expansion of funding for biotechnology research and growing adoption of advanced drug delivery systems in the region.
